What causes hair loss?
Overall thinning hair and bald patches can occur in both men and women at any age and for a variety of reasons.
Many of those causes are beyond our control. When that’s the case, we’re usually less concerned about “why” and more worried about our appearance and how the hair loss will affect our confidence.
The types of hair thinning and hair loss are different for men and women, but primarily fall under these categories:
-
Genetic predisposition
-
Underlying health conditions
-
Sudden changes in the body
-
Lack of certain nutrients
-
Hair care practices
If you experience sudden and unexplained hair loss, speak with your doctor as soon as possible.
Hair loss in women
The most common type of hair loss in women is androgenic alopecia (or female-pattern baldness) – which can occur at any point in your life. Unlike male-pattern baldness, women with this genetic predisposition tend to experience more overall thinning and a broadening part in the hair, rather than receding hairlines and bald patches.
Sudden hormonal or lifestyle changes are the second most common cause of hair loss in women. Many women lose hair after:
-
giving birth,
-
experiencing other particularly stressful events, or
-
drastically changing their diet or missing key nutrients.
-
Medical conditions that disrupt hormone production or affect the autoimmune system can also lead to hair loss. These include thyroid issues and conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome and coeliac disease.
Luckily, hair loss from these causes is usually reversible.
While there are some topical and medical treatments available, conditions like alopecia are generally ones that you will have to manage for life. Whether temporary or long-term, you can effectively conceal female hair loss using high-quality hair thickening fibres, like Magic Hair.
Hair loss in men
The overwhelming cause of hair loss and baldness in men is androgenic alopecia (or male-pattern baldness). This type of hereditary baldness is characterised by a receding hairline and at the crown of the head – progressing with age.
Like women, men can also experience more sudden shedding of hair from underlying medical conditions. However, male-pattern baldness remains the most common cause of hair loss in men.
Medication and topical products are available that can help slow genetic baldness in some men. However, their effectiveness varies. Natural hair thickening fibres, like Magic Hair, can help conceal hair loss in all men.
